The job

The job

What you paid for the parts on the job. Enter 0 if there are no parts.

What you charge the customer for the parts, before tax. Enter 0 if there are no parts.

The hours you bill the customer, not the hours on the clock. Enter 0 for a parts-only job.

What you charge for an hour, before tax.

What an hour of the technician's time costs you. If you do the work yourself, use your hourly cost: what an hour of your time costs the business.

What the number means

  • Margin is gross profit as a share of what the job charged, before tax. It counts parts at what you paid and labor at the technician's wage. Tax is never counted in it. The rent and the other costs of keeping the shop open are not taken off a single job; they are in the cost of a billed hour.

How it is worked out

  • Charged: parts price + labor hours × labor rate.
  • Cost: parts cost + labor hours × the technician's wage.
  • Profit: charged − cost.
  • Margin: profit ÷ charged, as a percent to one decimal.
  • GP / hr: profit ÷ labor hours.

The same figure, on every job

In Scarab OS, a job shows GP %, GP $ and GP / hr while it is still being quoted, to the owner and group managers. When a part has no cost, or the technician has no wage, it says profit is not known yet and why, rather than showing a margin built on a guess.
